Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA August 2019 15 Air Storm Fans Special Conditions Related to In-Field Wiring of Air Storm 54” Infinity Drive. When single phase units are supplied by 3 phase power and share a neutral conductor special consideration should be given to the current load that the neutral conductor will experience and with ensuring the power supply equipment (transformers) are capable of withstanding the harmonic currents. Harmonics generated by non-linear load results in currents in the neutral conductor that are not associated with an unbalanced 3 phase system. Non-linear loads such as computers, led lights, electronic ballasts, VFD fans, and Infinity Drive fans all have rectifiers. This creates a harmonics that add up and appear on the neutral wire. The Infinity drive specifically has a total harmonic distortion (THD) of approximately 75% at full load. For reference a computer can have 50-150% of (THD). Neutral current will be a maximum of 1.73 times the phase current for any system having greater than 70.7% THD. There are (2) options to eliminate/minimize the effect of the THD on the system. Option 1 (Neutral Size and Transformer Rating) Neutral sizing The neutral current will be 1.73 times the phase current for any Infinity Drive or VFD fan added to the panel. Rule of thumb, neutral wire should be 2 times the phase conductor wire. This will cover it regardless of the number of fans. However for International installations check local law requirements as they may differ based on IEC60364-5-523 standard for cable sizing and installation methods. Transformer Using a K rated transformer is necessary to withstand the harmonic currents. Use K-13 rated transformer when providing power to Infinity Drive or VFD fans. Option 2 (Incoming Line Reactors) Incoming Line Reactors An alternative solution to doubling the size of the neutral conductor, and utilizing a K-13 rated transformer would be to install incoming line reactor(s) to mitigate the THD. This can either be done with individual reactors sized to operate (1) unit or larger reactors meant to operate multiple units. (Please see chart below for sizing reference) *Part numbers below are provided for reference, alternative incoming line reactors of same type and size may be substituted.
