Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 3 Ventilation Systems Overview The mechanically actuated HSIN3050SW side wall inlet is designed to maximize the volumetric flow and throw of air pulled from outside of the barn to improve air quality conditions in a negative pressure environment. The HSIN1700SW inlet in nearly identical to the HSIN2 inlet except that its reduced height allows it to fit over cool cell pads. The plastic inlet is resistant to corrosion and the foam filled door increases the insulation value. The inlet was also designed to seal tightly in order to help prevent moisture and air from entering when the inlets are closed. Both inlets come fully assembled. Performance Data The HSIN3050SW and HSIN1700SW inlets have been tested in a highly automated wind tunnel to determine the volume of air (measured in cubic feet per minute) that can be pulled at different combinations of static pressure and opening widths. Table 1 represents the approximate airflow that can be expected through a HSIN3050SW or HSIN1700SW side wall inlet. Table 1: CFM Pull Through Side Wall Inlet Opening Width (In.) Static Pressure (In, H20) 0.05 0.1 0.15 1.5 200 400 550 3 550 850 1100 6 1200 1700 2000 11* 2150 3050 3700 *Applies only to model HSIN3050SW when it is fully open Pre-Installation Warnings  Do not leave the inlet sitting in direct sun light for long periods of time.  Do not place temperature sensors directly in the path of the air flow from the inlet.  Install the inlet system so that the ceiling inlets will not interfere with feed lines, cables, water lines, or other equipment in the barn.

Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 6 Ventilation Systems Side Wall Inlet Installation: STEP 1: Determine the inlet location. The location should be decided based on equal spacing of the number of inlets going into the barn, the location of studs and trusses, and the location of other components (i.e. feed lines, gas lines, etc.) that will also be installed in the building. Step 2: Construct a frame for the side wall inlet with the rough dimensions depicted in Figure 4 and Table 3. It is recommended that the frame should be as close to the ceiling as possible for best performance. Frame Top View (Figure 4) Table 3: Frame Dimensions Part Number A B HSIN3050SW 13 ½” 44 ½” HSIN1700SW 8 ¼” 44 ½” STEP 3: Finish installing building materials if new construction. Run a 1/8 inch or 3/16 inch steel rod (such as part number HS17060 or HSH17061) across the wall of the barn. It should be 2 to 3 inches above the top of the inlet. Step 4: Attach the steel rod to the cable of the same size that runs to the actuator and winch system. Clamp the rod and cable together with 3 to 4 appropriately sized cable clamps (such as part number 617321 or 617331). There should be 4 to 6 inches of overlap between the rod and cable. Route the other end of the cable to the actuation system. Cable and Rod Connection (Figure 5)

Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 7 Ventilation Systems Step 5: Attach an L-shaped bracket (part number 61745) into the wall at the other end of the steel rod line. Bolt a U-bolt (part number 60649) into the bracket. Attach a spring (part number 597093) to the U-bolt. Loop a piece of cable around the other end of the spring and secure it with cable clamps. Attach the other end of the cable to the end of the steel rod as depicted in Step 4. Ensure that the bracket, U-bolt and spring assembly are aligned with the steel rod during installation. Spring Connection to Wall (Figure 7) If a stud is not in line with the inlets, then fasten a 2X6 board between the trusses. Secure the bracket and U-bolt assembly to the 2X6 board. Connect the spring to the U-bolt, and clamp a piece of cable between the spring and the steel rod. Spring Connection to Ceiling (Figure 8) If more clearance is needed, then the spring can be installed in a vertical position. Connect the cable to the steel rod, run the cable through a 3 ½”pulley, and connect the other end of the cable to the spring. The spring and pulley should both be hooked onto U-bolt and bracket assemblies. Fasten a 2X6 board to the truss in the ceiling and another 2X6 to the stud in the wall in order to attach the brackets and provide enough support to carry the load of the inlet system. 90 Degree Spring Connection (Figure 9)

Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 8 Ventilation Systems Step 6: Fasten the inlets into the frame using #10 X 2” TEK tip screws (not provided). Insert four screws into the designated holes in the side panels first. Insert two screws in the center of the top and bottom panels last. Install Inlet into Frame (Figure 10) Step 7: Drill a 1/8” pilot hole slightly off-center above the inlet top panel. Insert the HSIN2-6 L-Shaped latch into the pilot hole. Screw it into the wood deep enough to hold the inlet securely shut. Insert L-Shaped Latch (Figure 11) Step 8: Fasten a small pulley into the wall underneath the actuation rod, slightly off-centered above the inlet. Run the black rope (62040-3) through the hole in the door of the inlet. Fasten one end of the rope in the side cleat attached to the door. Loop the other end of the rope through the pulley and secure it to the rod with the cable clamp with the inlet door FULLY OPEN. Actuation of Side Inlet (Figure 12) IMPORTANT NOTE: The rope should be secured on the side of the rod going toward the actuator. The actuator should pull the inlet closed when turned on.

Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 9 Ventilation Systems Step 9: Install bird wire (not provided) on the outside of the frame so that pests and debris cannot enter. Install Bird Wire on the Outside of Frame (Figure 13) NOTE: If desired, install a hood on the outside of the inlet frame to provide protection from rain and sunlight such as the HS48X14 black plastic vent cover (not provided). Vent Cover (Figure 14) Step 10: Repeat Step 6 through Step 9 detailed above for every inlet in the barn. Step 11: Adjust the actuator so that the inlets open and close simultaneously to the desired opening width. Ensure that the actuator is in the fully closed position before adjusting and tightening up the inlets in the closed position. The inlets may be damaged if the actuator attempts to close the inlets when they are already fully closed.

Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 10 Ventilation Systems Connection to Actuation System Selecting an Actuation System: Either the GrowerSELECT curtain machine (HS583E) or the linear actuator (HS667-24) can be used to actuate the inlet system in conjunction with a winch. Hog Slat Inc. Newton Grove, NC USA October 2019 11 Ventilation Systems Pulley Systems: The ceiling inlet and actuation system can be set up to run in a 1:1 or a 2:1 pulley system. The 1:1 configurations allows for shorter open/close times. The 2:1 configuration allows for a greater load capacity. Figures 17, 18, and 19 provide an explanation of both systems. 1:1 Ratio (Figure 17) 1:1 Ratio Direct Pull (Figure 18) 2:1 Ratio (Figure 19) For each (1) inch travel of the machine there is (1) inch travel of the Load. 1,000lb max each side = 2,000lb total load. For each (2) inch travel of the machine there is (1) inch travel of the Load. 2,000 max each side = 4,000lb total load 2,000lb max 2,000lb max 1,000lb max 1,000lb max 2,000lb max For each (1) inch travel of the machine there is (1) inch travel of the Load. 2,000lb one side total load
