HSMANUAL-255 February 2026 5|Page Classic Pullet Pan Feeding System Planning Guidelines (continued) Capacity and Choosing Settings Though the number of pans placed in the barn is derived from a target of birds per pan, the capacity of those pans is equally important. Inches of available feed space is often common among manufacturers in the poultry market, though the capacity of those feeders will vary greatly. Knowing your feeder capacity during the planning phase provides a better expectation of what feed distribution will look like during the flock. Having too much capacity per feeder translates to reduced distribution that other efforts like indexing can’t fix. Feeder Capacity is dependent on the non-flood level setting and the presence or absence of a Restrictor Cone. The below table shows approximate feed capacities based on a nominal feed density of 40 lbs./ft³. More accurate weights can be calculated by taking the density of the feed intended for use, dividing it by 40 lbs./ft³, and then multiplying it by the table value for a specific feed level setting. Once the needed capacity per feeder is determined, it may fall in a range where with and without a restrictor cone overlap. In this case, it is recommended to use the restrictor cone at a higher setting rather than use no restrictor cone at a lower setting. This will shift more of the feeder capacity to within the pan itself and make for more immediate feed presentation.
